This tour focuses on the celebrated Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation, in the company of Dr Jane MacKay who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of her passion for great literature. Kazantzakis was one of the most important Greek writers and philosophers of the 20th Century, influenced by the writings of Nietzsche and Bergson and by the philosophies behind Marxism, Christianity and Buddhism. We will also learn about the works of ‘El Greco’ (Domenikos Theotokopoulos 1541-1614), born in Crete and immensely admired by Kazantzakis, which resulted in his wonderful spiritual autobiography “Report to Greco”. Dr. Mackay will talk about their works and we will visit places connected with them both.
